Low Back Osteoarthritis is also known as Lumbar Spinal Stenosis Our low back is made up of the last five vertebrae of the spine, called the lumbar vertebrae or lumbar spine. The boney knobs that run down the spine are part of the vertebrae and are called the “spinous process.” On either side of each spinous process, a facet joint connects each vertebra together to form the spine. Lined with a smooth, rubbery layer of cartilage, these facet joints separate the vertebra and allow their movements to be smooth and painless.
What is Low Back Osteoarthritis?
Low back osteoarthritis (OA) is a spinal osteoarthritis that occurs when that layer of cartilage breaks down and wears away. This causes one bone to rub on another bone. In severe cases, painful bone spurs called osteophytes can form in the place of cartilage. Lumbar spinal stenosis occurs when the narrowing of the spinal cord puts pressure on the spinal nerves and compresses or pinches them. One cause of spinal stenosis is low back OA because of bone spurs. Most people (60%) over the age of 40 have some joint degeneration in the lower back, even though it may not always cause pain.
What are the Causes of Low Back OA?
Factors that contribute to Low Back OA are Increasing age (especially 65 and above) Gender (women are more susceptible), Being overweight, Family history of osteoarthritis, Previous low back injuries, Genetic defects in the cartilage or spine and Long-term, repetitive strain on the low back (occupational or recreational).
What are the Signs and Symptoms?
Among the most common symptoms is low back pain. Pain develops slowly over time but can appear suddenly. Stiffness or tenderness in the low back, Decreased range of motion and flexibility (especially in the morning) or after periods of inactivity, Dull, aching pain, or sharpened pain during or after strenuous activity and Muscle spasms in the low back are some other symptoms. Symptoms of tingling, weakness, numbness, or pain that radiates from the low back into the buttocks, thigh, or groin are caused because of Spinal stenosis.
