What Causes Groin Pain?

In high-speed running, direction change, or jumping and landing sports, groin pain is a common injury. With highly stressed anchor points and the involvement of pelvis joints as well as your lumbosacral spine, the musculature is complicated. Tendonopathy, such as adductor tendinopathy, can result from these injuries.

Your pubic symphysis, sacroiliac joints, hip joints, and low lumbar spine are all likely to be involved in groin pain. Osteitis pubis is an example of excessive stress that occurs through your pubic symphysis. Femoroacetabular impingement is a bone impingement that needs to be managed carefully to avoid surgery. Deep groin discomfort can also be caused by hip arthritis or a hip labral tear. A stress fracture, which can affect either your pelvis or your femur, can also develop.

Muscle control is an important part of groin pain therapy and prevention. To control your lower limb on your pelvis and pelvis on your spine, your deep abdominal core muscles, deep hip rotators, gluteals, adductors, and lower back muscles all work together. Groin pain can be caused by any muscle imbalance or lack of coordination. An adductor muscle strain, often known as a groin strain, is the most frequent groin muscle injury. Hip flexor strains are very common, particularly in sports involving kicking and running.

Other passive tissue, such as your inguinal wall, can be overstressed, leading to inguinal hernia and sportsman’s hernia.

Groin discomfort can be caused by a variety of systemic illnesses. Rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis, and osteoarthritis are among these. Any issues should be discussed with your physiotherapist or doctor.

Common Causes of Hip & Groin Pain

  1. Hip Joint Pain – Some people experience catching or clicking sensation in their hip. When the hip joint is stretched by walking long distances, standing for lengthy periods of time, or ascending stairs, the discomfort usually gets worse. The pain is commonly felt in the groin, although it can also be felt on the side of the hip, in the buttocks, and in the knee. Common hip joint pain in the groin include:
  • Hip Arthritis – Hip Osteoarthritis
  • Hip Labral Tear
  • Hip Pointer
  • Femoroacetabular Impingement – FAI
  • Perthes Disease
  • Slipped Femoral Capital Epiphysis
  • Stress Fracture
  • Avascular Necrosis of the Femoral Head
  1. Lateral Hip Pain – Pain on the outside of the hip is known as lateral hip pain. This type of pain might come on suddenly or gradually. Common lateral hip pain in the groin include:
  • Gluteal Tendinopathy
  • Greater Trochanteric Pain Syndrome
  • Trochanteric Bursitis
  1. Adductor-Related Groin Pain – Groin pain caused by the adductor muscles and their connections occurs in the groin region (upper-inner thigh). Tears or strains can develop inside the adductor muscles, at the musculotendinous junctions where the muscles and tendons meet, or within the tendons themselves (attaches the muscle to the bone). Common adductor-related groin pain in the groin include:
  • Adductor Tendinopathy
  • Groin Strain
  1. Pubic-Related Groin Pain – ‘Pubic Related Groin Pain’ refers to groin pain that develops over the pubic symphysis. Common pubic-related groin pain in the groin include:
  • Osteitis Pubis
  1. Inguinal-Related Groin Pain – Overuse usually causes inguinal disruption, but it can also happen as a result of a sudden strong movement during sports exercises such as kicking, twisting, cutting, and quick acceleration motions, causing a tear in the abdominal fascia. Common inguinal-related groin pain in the groin include:
  • Inguinal hernia
  • Sportsman’s hernia
  1. Other Muscle-Related Pain – Some other muscle related pain includes:
  • Piriformis Syndrome
  • Muscle Pain -Muscle Strain
  • Poor Hip Core
  • DOMS -Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness
  • Cramps
  • Core Stability Deficiency
